The CalMatters College Journalism Network (CJN) brings together student journalists from across the state to collaborate on group reporting projects, pitch and write stories for CalMatters and our media partners, and receive training. CJN is seeking a summer intern to write stories and assist in preparing for the next cohort of CJN fellows.
Job duties
- Report higher education stories with a goal of 3-4 bylines
- Assist CJN editors with preparing for the 2025-26 cohort
Required Qualifications
- Journalism or related coursework in college
- Demonstrated news reporting experience (student news organization OK)
- Past experience as a College Journalism Network fellow
- Based in California

This full-time position pays $20 per hour and runs for 12 weeks, typically June through August, but we try to be flexible.

- What do you hope to gain from a summer internship with the College Journalism Network? How would this opportunity help support you in your journalism career and/or build on what you’ve already learned in the program?
- What are two higher education story ideas you’d want to work on this summer? (These don’t need to be perfectly-written pitches, but please include the angle you’d take, how you’d approach the reporting and why you think this is a story that needs to be told.)
- Aside from written text, how might you also produce a vertical video to go with each of your stories?
- What is one idea you have for a project you could work on this summer that would benefit next year’s class of fellows?
- Thinking about the CJN as a whole, what could we do to help improve the experience for next year’s class?
- Do you have any other commitments this summer that could interfere with your availability to work full-time?
